*What is an Enrolled Agent? An Enrolled Agent is a person who has earned the privilege of practicing before the Internal Revenue Service. Enrolled Agents, like attorneys and Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) are generally unrestricted as to which taxpayers they can represent, what types of tax matters they can handle, and which IRS offices they can practice before. An individual becomes an Enrolled Agent by demonstrating special competence in tax matters by passing a two-day, four-part written examination on taxes. The exam is administered by the IRS, given only once each year and the average pass rate for this exam is less than 30%. An Enrolled Agent also must meet high standards in continuing education and ethical practices.
